ABOUT THE COURSE

This webinar is intended to teach physical therapists and physical therapy assistants considerations for the patient who is pregnant and experiencing pain. Topics will include pain at the pubic symphysis, coccyx, and round ligament, meralgia parasthetica, and vulvar varicosities. This course incorporates a basic review of how anatomy and physiology change during pregnancy and can contribute to these pain conditions, examination and treatment options, and tips for birth preparation.

Course Objectives:

  • Discuss the anatomy and physiologic changes that occur during pregnancy and how they can contribute to pain.

  • Understand screening and red flags of pelvic pain during pregnancy

  • Define common pelvic pain conditions that can occur during pregnancy.

  • Describe various interventions to reduce pain during pregnancy and provide options for labor and birth.

Dr. Caitlin McCurdy-Robinson is a pelvic health and orthopedic Physical Therapist and the Owner of Inner Strength Physical Therapy, LLC in Charleston, South Carolina. Caitlin has received the Certificate of Achievement in Pregnancy and Postpartum through the American Physical Therapy Association’s Academy of Pelvic Health and received a Certification as a Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist through Core Exercise Solutions. Caitlin has a passion for helping people maintain or achieve an active and vibrant lifestyle throughout their lifespan, including pregnancy and postpartum. Her enthusiasm for the topic of pain during pregnancy stemmed from her experience assisting patients with pelvic pain through the uncertainties of how their body might adapt if/when they became pregnant. Caitlin believes that physical therapy can play a pivotal role in both treatment and prevention for people during and after pregnancy.
